Flu season is almost upon us, and as the weather begins to cool down keeping yourself healthy can be challenging. When you are trying to conceive it’s important to maintain healthy habits, but especially during winter when your immunity can be low. To help you and your partner healthy during flu season, we have created this easy to follow guide:

 

Vaccination

The flu vaccine is highly accessible and is best done annually. Getting vaccinated is your best defence against the flu. Timing is important as the vaccine can wear off over time. It is good to get vaccinated around April or May. While getting vaccinated is important, so is good hygiene, exercise and diet.

 

Boost your diet

Vitamin C helps keep our immune systems strong, it is also a vitamin that enhances fertility (it helps in triggering ovulation for women and boosts sluggish sperm in men).  Think about including fruits and veggies such as oranges, broccoli, berries, peppers and kiwi fruits into your diet. A fresh juice is also a good option.

 

Exercise – Keep on moving

While exercise is always a good idea, it is especially important for boosting your immune system. A steady amount of regular exercise has a hugely positive effect on your immune system. With the increased circulation that exercise brings, the white blood cells can keep moving around the body to help beat off infection.

(When referring to a ‘steady amount’ of exercise we suggest around 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day.)

 

Sleep

Making sure you are getting enough sleep is essential to maintaining good health. When you are tired and rundown your body is more susceptible to illness. Good sleep habits include establishing and sticking to a routine and going to bed at the same time each night. Relaxing for an hour before bed can help you fall asleep, avoiding caffeine and other stimulants before sleep and staying away from blue light such as phone screens or laptops.

 

Wash your hands

Being aware of sanitation and clean spaces is a great way to limit your chances of catching the flu. Wash your hands as regularly as possible and make sure your work and living spaces are kept clean. When washing your hands, make sure to lather extensively to dislodge any germs and when coughing or sneezing, try to cover your mouth with your elbow and not your hands to refrain from spreading it to others.
